when we closed the lid to put it in standby mode it would still ratchet up its fan speed

On the more-demanding Company of Heroes, the VGN-FZ485U/B managed only 16.1fps at 1,024×768. So while the machine is usable for the casual gamer, serious 3D players will want to look to a more expensive rig.

Even worse, when we closed the lid to put it in standby mode it would still ratchet up its fan speed. We’re not sure why Gateway designs its systems this way, but the last Gateway FX desktop we tested behaved in a similar fashion. It’s not annoying to the point of being a deal-breaker, but it was annoying enough that rather than just leaving it on, we put the system to sleep when we weren’t using it.

We timed a few other notebooks, including the Gateway P-6825 and Fujitsu LifeBook V1010, and all of them took at least 90 seconds to boot—some closer to 3 minutes. For even faster initial operation, look to Dell’s Media Direct feature.

Which provides near-instant access to your photos, music, movies, contacts, and even presentations without HP HSTNN-CB0C Battery having to boot Windows. All you do is press the Home button next to the power button, then wait a few seconds for Media Direct to start.

With its handsome design, sharp screen, and extensive list of options, it’s hard not to love the Dell XPS M1330. For buyers who need a HP ProBook 4710s battery constant computing companion, it’s worth a long look.

Multimedia performance was solid as well; the PC completed our Windows Media Encoder test in a relatively snappy 7 minutes and 5 seconds, and hit an above-average Dreambox 800 HD PVR rendering score of 666 on Cinebench 9.5.

Despite its discrete graphics chip, however, you won’t get much gaming out of this Dreambox 800 business machine—the R61 scored a mere 1,839 on Futuremark 3DMark06 at a low 1,024×768 resolution. This is to be expected, however, because the notebook’s nVidia Quadro chip isn’t designed to handle the latest 3D titles.

Its showing of 7 minutes and 40 seconds on our Windows Media Encoder 9 trial and scores on our Cinebench 9.5 and Cinebench 10 image-rendering tests (657 and 4,131, respectively) were a bit lower than what we’ve seen from other media-centric portables, but still decent.

As for productivity chores, the VGN-FZ485U/B couldn’t run Futuremark’s PCMark05, but it scored 2,467 on the more Vista-friendly PCMark Vantage, which is good for a multimedia machine.
