the new version of the MacBook Pro improves what was already a very good machine

Our test unit was equipped with Windows Vista Ultimate x64; Windows 7 is now available in this model. If you insist on desktop performance and would like a PC that’s transportable, the Panther delivers.

The MacBook Pro comes bundled with the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which includes iLife ’09 (comprising GarageBand, iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto, and iWeb).

The Panther’s biggest problem is one of timing: Our test unit arrived for review at the same time that Intel’s mobile Core i7 series of CPUs began shipping in notebooks from Alienware and other manufacturers. (Indeed, Eurocom itself has even announced Cheetah and Cougar models based on these chips.)

Although we would love to have seen better processor performance and a Blu-ray player, as well as some media-card slots, the new version of the MacBook Pro improves what was already a very good machine.

That said, the Panther’s performance lets it compete directly with desktop Core i7 PCs, and even with its heft and bulk, it’s still a lot easier to lug around than a desktop PC, keyboard, mouse, and LCD monitor.

The first thing you’ll notice about this 3.3-pounder is its case, which is covered in genuine leather and available in three shades: chocolate brown, camel, and a limited-edition hot pink. Asus also bundles a matching leather-covered mouse and a carrying bag.

Parents seeking to introduce their youngsters to the world of personal computers may be lured into the Disney-themed PeeWee PC Pivot Tablet Laptop . (This model is not to be confused with the Disney Netpal netbook, which is also newly available.)

When you tout yourself as “The Home of the World’s Fastest Laptops”—and name one of your contenders after a legendary sports car—you’ve got a lot to prove.

We just reviewed the Asus Eee PC 1005PE, which runs Intel’s new Pine Trail platform, and though we couldn’t tell much difference in performance times, the resulting life was impressively noteworthy.

If installing your own hard drive, RAM, and operating system into a netbook constitutes “building your own,” then OCZ has you covered.
