Media Center has a slicker interface, an update of the familiar blue interface that’s usable from the couch. But QuickPlay has its merits, too, most notably the fact that it supports the Slingbox.

We had a second beef apart from the battery: the bundled security software. Acer’s preloaded 60-day trial of McAfee SecurityCenter may be a selling point, but it doesn’t do the Aspire’s performance any favors.

The Panther’s GeForce GTX 280M graphics processing unit (GPU) is the fastest mobile GPU available, delivering excellent performance for a portable computer.

However, the 3D performance of this mobile GPU falls well behind that of its desktop GeForce GTX 280 counterpart. Still, it offers excellent gaming performance, and both DVD and Blu-ray playback are smooth and vibrant.

The high resolution makes this an attractive machine for designers, as well, allowing a great deal of real estate for palettes and workspaces.

The Y530’s sound was superb for a laptop, thanks to its five speakers: two below the screen, two along the sides of the keyboard, and one small, downward-facing subwoofer that actually manages to kick out a fair amount of bass.

Don’t expect to rock the house, but there’s plenty of volume to kick out some serious living-room jams, and adjust speaker volume via the slider control.

A very thin strip of illuminated touch-sensitive controls at the top of the keyboard deck lets you enable the Wi-Fi Link 5100 wireless radio and the touchpad, access the HP Presentation applet.

The U30Jc-A1 has a healthy collection of connectivity options. The left side of the notebook has two USB 2.0 ports, VGA and HDMI video-out ports, mic and headphone jacks, and a lock slot.

On the right side of the notebook is the tray for the 8x DVD±RW drive, plus another USB 2.0 port, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and the power jack.

As you can see above, in the bottom-right corner is a nest of control buttons. The central OK button is your basic “enter” key; you use it to make selections or send alphanumeric info to the Libre.
