The drive’s write speed is a secondary consideration, and slower drives are cheaper. For crisp text and smooth video playback, go with the maximum resolution available on the screen size you choose.

Our configuration included a GeForce 8800M GTX graphics chip upgrade—previously available only in larger 17-inch Alienware models; an Intel Penryn-based 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme X9000 processor; 4GB of DDR2 RAM; a Blu-ray burner/DVD±RW combo drive; a 1,920×1,200 screen; a 200GB internal drive; and an additional 320GB swappable hard drive.

The design isn’t cutting-edge, but it’s appealing in its own understated way. Fujitsu has included four programmable hard keys above the function-key row, though we would like to see dedicated volume buttons as well.

The full-size keyboard is quiet and comfortable, though a bit spongy. We like the pebbled, low-friction surface of the touch pad, and we’re happy to see a fingerprint reader nestled between the mouse buttons.

The laptop measures 1.4×14x10.5 inches and weighs 6.2 pounds, straddling the line between travel companion and stay-at-home desktop replacement. It has a sturdy build, too, and feels like it could take a few knocks.

If you’re not ready for that kind of a switch, you can expect around an hour for any PC of this size. The idea is that you’re expected to bring big computers like these to LAN parties and plug them in, not haul them to Starbucks.

Still, with a frame rate of 28.6 frames per second (fps) on our demanding Company of Heroes DirectX 10 (DX10) test (at native resolution) and 35.7fps on our Far Cry 2 DX10 benchmark, the Envy 15’s 3D performance should satisfy all but hard-core gamers.

Under more typical use, you can expect 3 to 4 hours of life, and Dell offers a nine-cell battery slice that the company says should get you to 11 hours of runtime in typical use when used in conjunction with the main six-cell , as long as you don’t mind carrying the 1.4 pounds of extra heft. (A second regular battery might be a better option.)

We have to wonder, however, if the older end of the Netpal’s age range might be a bit too advanced for the Netpal’s kid-themed designs.
